Bone densitometry
Osteoporosis (bone loss) is a chronic ‘silent’ disease. Specifically, it entails a sharp decrease in bone density, which increases the risk of fractures. Why ‘silent’? Because typically, there are no symptoms of osteoporosis. Frequently, it’s only noticed after it’s too late.
Bone density scans facilitate a simple, painless diagnosis.
Thanks to the next generation of equipment, radiation exposure is minimal (less than during a standard flight), and we can measure a wide range, e.g.:
- osteoporosis
- vertebral compression fractures
- scoliosis (misalignment of the spine)
- leg length difference
- reduced leg length
- muscle mass of different body areas
- fat percentage and lean mass of each body area
- abdominal fat in grams (visceral fat) and metabolic syndrome (diabetes, cardiovascular diseases) risk assessment
- calorie consumption (useful for diet advice)
